The Lay of the Land
Students at Vincent Smith School in Port Washington were the perfect hosts as Teepee Ted came on campus to share his knowledge of Native American culture and their survival on Long Island. A portion of the grounds were transformed to allow for the construction of a teepee and the display of countless artifacts.
Students had fun sitting in the teepee and hearing stories of the past. They also played native games such as sticks, which at the time were played with animal bones. Students were able to make their own jewelry from leather and beads. They also learned to grind dried corn and make music on a rawhide drum. Wearing authentic deer skins helped take the chill out the fall air.
