Home Depot (Under Construction)

Vincent Smith School Students Learn Tricks of the Trade

Vincent Smith Middle School students rolled up their sleeves and got to work during a recent Kids Workshop sponsored by the Hempstead Home Depot. Students were excited to participate in the hands-on workshop that ended with each child taking home a construction project they had created themselves. It was the first time many of the students had built anything on their own.

Home Depot representatives Christine Thornton, Michelle May and Christy Vosselman were extremely professional, knowledgeable and patient. It was inspiring for VSS girls to see women who could handle tools so eloquently, and eye-opening for the young men who prior to the workshop “didn’t think women could build stuff.”

Vincent Smith School students have aspirations of being everything from school teachers to lawyers. The visit from Home Depot opened up a few more options that involve working with their hands. The art room was transformed into a builders’ workshop as students nailed their toolboxes together under the guidance of HD representatives.

Students had fun participating in the workshop, but it also reinforced several skills such as cooperation, following directions, planning, organization and eye-hand coordination. At day’s end, every middle school student boarded their bus wearing a Home Depot Kids Workshop apron with a completion pin attached. They proudly carried their self-made toolboxes with their certificates inside.
