Representatives from the Syosset Fire Department visited students at the Vincent Smith School in a heroic gesture to teach them about fire safety and rescue. VSS lower school students were excited to see the big red fire truck with lights flashing and firefighters in gear. The lessons students learned went beyond the customary - yet very important - Stop, Drop and Roll.
Fire Educational Officer Ken Johnson and Firefighter Donald Russo shared safety tips about emergency notification, escape, advanced planning, job training and preparation and they showed off the latest tools and technology used by their firefighters. Captain Johnson was a crowd favorite when he let students look through the Thermal Imaging Camera, which allows firefighters to see through walls and other items for search and rescue. The visit was made even more special by the fact that one of Captain Russo's most important responsibilities is being dad to a VSS sixth grader. Students were impressed with his stature as he stood in full gear with all of his equipment on and tools in tow. Captains Johnson and Russo left the students educational gifts upon their departure, promising to visit again in the spring, allowing students to participate in outdoor drills and sit in the fire truck.
